Why transshipment is used in the shipping industry

What’s one of the shipping industries’ biggest responsibilities? To export, import, and transport items, of course. Most shipping companies make use of their ships to transport goods over vast distances. Tanker ship management entails the transportation of chemicals. The cargo ship industry is preoccupied with moving cargo. Passenger ships and cruise ships move people. As a mode of transportation, the ship is highly effective in its goal. In an idealised world, shipping something from one part of the world to another should be fairly straightforward: like moving from point A to B. Unfortunately, the world doesn’t work like that. Ships often have to make secondary stops before arriving at the final destination. This is called transshipment.

The goals of transshipment
Transshipment is the shipment of goods to an intermediate stop (or multiple stops), before finally arriving at the destination. For example, goods needing transshipment can stop at floating ports in Singapore before arriving in other destinations in Southeast Asia. This is one example of it.

There are many reasons why transshipment needs to happen. It might feel counterintuitive but transshipment serves a variety of uses, namely:

  1. Cost-efficient. Sometimes, it may be more expensive to directly ship something from an origin country.
  2. Convenient. Shipping items in bulk? Why not use a single trip to disperse all your items?
  3. Connections. Some ports have no direct connections to the destination.
